As part of its welfare reform programme, the Government is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
The Government began replacing DLA with PIP in April 2013 in Great Britain and on 20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland. The DWP (or Department for Communities in Northern Ireland) are writing to affected DLA recipients informing them that they will need to apply for PIP. The DWP continue to make payments until a decision on the PIP claim has been made. The most important thing you can do at this stage is ensure that the DWP (Department for Communities in Northern Ireland) has your correct contact details. You don't need to do anything else until the department writes to you, however, once they have contacted you, make sure you respond within their given timescales.
If you are aged 16 to 64, you may be entitled to PIP if you have a daily living and/or mobility needs and require extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition. The DWP makes the decision about the amount of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) you get and for how long. PIP is made up of 2 components called daily living
and mobility, and each can be paid at either a standard or enhanced rate.
The Motability Scheme works with PIP in the same way as it does with DLA. If you are newly awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP and have at least 12 months remaining on your award, you will be able to lease a car, scooter, powered wheelchair or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle through the Motability Scheme.
Are there many forms to complete?
There is no paperwork at all - no forms to fill in, no
assessments or credit checks to go through. It's all done by one of our
trained Motability specialists.
Will anyone want to check my physical condition?
No. There are no assessments of any kind. Provided you have at
least 12 months left to run on the Higher Rate Mobility Component of
the Disability Living Allowance, you are eligible.
Do I have to be a driver?
No. You don't have to drive to take out a car on the Scheme - you can nominate up to two drivers.
What if I need my car adapted?
We have a wide range of car adaptations available, many at no
extra cost. If you'd like more information, please call and ask
Motability for 'Make it Yours' - their free guide to adaptations.
I have a
good no claims history. Can I carry this forward if I leave the Car Scheme in the future?
The Scheme insurers, Royal & Sun Alliance Motability are able to provide confirmation of the claims history on the policy.
Do you understand what I need from a car?
Paynes Garages partnership with Motability involves special
training to make sure we understand the needs of people with a
disability. Many people comment on how friendly and helpful we are and
often return to us again and again to order their Motability car.
What if my circumstances change over the next three years?
Depending on the circumstances, Motability look at each case
individually, and do their best to accommodate your new requirements.
I have chosen the car I want, what should I do next?
Once you've chosen the car, you simply need to place your
order. Just bring these three things along to us: The driving licence of
any planned drivers, your letter of award entitlement and proof of your
address (such as a recent utility bill). We'll take care of everything
else.
